New Line of CARB Compliant Adhesives Compliant Adhesives for Plywood and Lamination Products at IWF 2010.

Published: 7/10/2010

Franklin Adhesives & Polymers, a division of Franklin International, has made it easy for manufacturers of plywood and lamination products to find the right adhesive technology for their production line with the unveiling of the new Plywood Line, a first-of-its-kind selection of seven CARB-compliant adhesives that draw upon three very different bonding technologies – including one based on the use of soy.

The division will unveil the line at booth 2016 during the International Woodworking Fair (IWF), held in Atlanta, Ga. August 26 to 28.

The line introduces Franklin Adhesives & Polymers’ first-ever bio-modified adhesives, using soy technology the division developed during research funded through a grant from the United Soybean Board. The division is deeply committed to the development of environmentally safe products and explored the use of soy as a renewable resource that reduces reliability on petrochemical derivatives.

The Plywood Line introduces two new bio-modified, easy-to-use one-part polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesives that meet ANSI/HPVA type 2 water resistance. The first, Multibond MX-100, is developed for engineered hardwood plywood. It offers a long open time and builds tack with time. Multibond MX-100 is the only adhesive in the plywood
line developed for production lines that use a prepress. Its sister adhesive, Multibond MX-200, is developed for direct-feed hot-press operations.

The new Plywood Line also unveils a powerful emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI) adhesive, Multibond EP-930. This two-part adhesive meets ANSI/HPVA Type 1 and Type 2 water resistance, is ideal for hot pressing and offers high radio frequency conductivity.

Manufacturers of plywood and lamination products also will find four conventional Multibond PVA products among the adhesives in the Plywood Line.  Each of these one-part adhesives offers unique performance characteristics for specific applications:
• Multibond 2015 offers longer open time for hot or cold veneering of hardwood plywood and has radio frequency capabilities. In addition to meeting ANSI/HPVA Type 2 water resistance, it also meets WDMA Type 1 and Type 2 water resistance. It is formulated with bleed-through resistance.
• Multibond MX-90 also offers long open time for hot or cold veneering of hardwood plywood. It is developed specifically for hot press operations. Like Multibond 2015, it is formulated with bleed-through resistance and meets ANSI/HPVA Type 2 water resistance as well as WDMA Type 1 and Type 2 water resistance.
• Multibond 2580 is an especially robust, two-part adhesive that performs well on difficult substrates, such as hickory. It is an excellent adhesive for hot pressing and easily meets ANSI/HPVA Type 2 water resistance.
• Advantage 435 meets ANSI/HPVA Type 1 and Type 2 water resistance. It is the only PVA adhesive in the line to pass Type 1 water resistance testing and comply with CARB regulations.

All adhesives in the new Plywood Line qualify for LEED credits.

“We have developed the Plywood Line to give manufacturers of plywood and lamination products a unique range of adhesive technologies and high-performance products to meet their individual production needs,” said Jaye Schroeder, vice president, wood adhesives market development, North America. “As a leader in green adhesives technology, we take pride in offering such a full line of high-performance CARB-compliant products – and are especially proud to introduce our first-ever adhesives to incorporate soy.

The Plywood Line is among a broad offering of adhesives formulated by Franklin Adhesives & Polymers to meet a wide variety of applications within the millwork, furniture and engineered lamination industries. The division produces adhesives under the brand names Multibond, Advantage, Titebond® and Assembly to meet the full scope of needs within woodworking plants.
