Industrial Wood Adhesives: Adhering to Precision
Wood adhesives are a type of substance used in wood bonding operations to adhere substrates together. While most commonly thought of for wood-to-wood bonding, these adhesives can also be formulated to bond wood to an array of materials including laminates, metals and fabrics. Since our founding in 1935 with a liquid, ready-to-use hide glue for fine furniture manufacturers, Franklin International has been a leader in crafting adhesive solutions to meet the unique needs of the industry.
Franklin A&P offers a diverse portfolio of adhesive technologies, each with tailored processing and performance benefits.
Types of Wood Adhesive Technologies Produced by Franklin A&P
While other technologies are used in the marketplace, Franklin A&P focuses our developments in five core technologies to address customer need for high performance and reliability. Our diverse portfolio of products allows us to tailor formulas to each customer’s unique manufacturing specification.
- Aliphatic Resins Emulsion Polymer Isocyanates (EPIs)
- Water-Based Poly Vinyl Acetates (PVAs)
- Cross-Linked Poly Vinyl Acetates (XL-PVAs)
- 2 Component Cross-Linked Poly Vinyl Acetates (2pt XL-PVAs)

Setting the Standard for Performance
When developing and testing formulated adhesives, our chemists and technicians also note designated or emerging regulatory guidelines, performance capabilities, manufacturing methods, and industry standards for each adhesive.
Each of these considerations are unique and offer new perspectives to how we drive innovation:
Regulatory Guidelines for adhesives address their ingredients and potential impacts on the environment, manufacturers, and users. General provisions can include callouts to no added formaldehyde (NAF), no or low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and the use of regionally regulated non-hazardous chemicals.
Franklin strives to offer products that meet the needs of our customers. Product fitness should be confirmed by the customer prior to use. Reach out to our technical service team for regulatory and performance questions.
Performance Capabilities highlight key product features that range from traits during manufacturing operations to how the adhesive performs in an end-use consumer product. Examples of these key product features include water resistance, heat resistance, curing qualities, open and working times, substrate capabilities, glue line color, and manufacturing specifications.
Manufacturing Methods are how the wood is bonded to another substrate. Franklin A&P has set out to help manufacturers troubleshoot their operation with guides for common methods such as hot pressing, cold pressing, radio frequency, and finger joint gluing.
Industry Standards are a set of requirements largely adopted within an industry to measure a product’s ability and fitness for use. Examples of organizing bodies heavily involved with the adhesives industry and the wood manufacturing market include:
